The Guardian AU has published a gallery of images from a community fashion week I was involved with and photographed in Ramingining, Arnhem Land last month. Comprising modelling workshops, a runway show, and a photoshoot on location, Ramingining Fashion Week was organised by Bula’bula Arts and provided an opportunity community to see and celebrate garments featuring artworks by local Yolgnu artists, worn by local models, many for the first time.
On the runway, models showcased 30 looks from Ḻomuyirr (Soar) and Garkambarryirri (Daybreak) collections which were created by Bula’bula Arts artists and Darwin-based Black Cat Couture NT, debuting at Country to Couture in 2024 and 2025. In the lead up to the parade, Tiwi Islands model Cassie Black hosted a three-day workshop for young people focused on confidence, self-expression, runway technique and posing skills, culminating in a sunset photoshoot on location.
Around 200 people attended the fashion show, many to support the family and friends modelling the garments and the 19 artists whose works featured on hand-painted fabric panels, screen printed fabric and woven pandanus accessories.
